I went to my local Best Buy's midnight release, came home, installed...and learned how bad I am at this game.

Never played any of the earlier BFs but I certainly understand the concept of not running around guns blazing...keeping to cover, etc. Hopefully, as I play more I'll be able to actually help my team rather than be a point sink.
Just a warning if you let me into the platoon. I am essentially a red shirt! Which leads me to the question...should I wait to apply until I have more of a handle on the game? I don't want to drag down the platoon's stats. Right now I think my biggest problem is just seeing the enemy.
If you are new, try out the single player campaign. Jumping in the multiplayer games can be intimidating, but can be a good learning experience. Lag on the various servers can affect your experience. The game will keep track of which servers you play on, and I think you can mark server favorites for your self. Servers can have their own subtle rules, or maps rotation. When I first started playing BF2, I found a server that had a cap on what rank you could be on that server. This made it fairer for lower level characters to play. There could be one of those servers available. Players that work together as a team will do better. As your character progresses, you'll unlock new abilities which can give you an advantage. Try out the 4 different classes.
You can have multiple characters, if stats are your concern. At least that was true with the other BF games.
