    Shroud of Souls Storyline Preview

In the first post of our Shroud of Souls preview series, we are quickly going through the solo campaign story. As always, please do not continue if you don’t like spoilers and want to experience the story yourself. For the rest: Have fun reading through the article!

screenshot_2017-03-30-17-24-01.jpg?resizFinally a bit of free time… Lukan keeps everyone busy

screenshot_2017-03-30-17-26-39.jpg?resizSince the update mainly targets guilds, the story addition is not really huge. If you’ve already completed chapter five of the original Cloaked Ascendancy storyline, you’ll be welcomed by Sergeant Knox in the Driftwood Tavern. The casual get-together however doesn’t last too long as Kavatos drags Lukan into the scene. The unlucky illusionist has unintentionally broken a warding rune under the River District that opened a portal to the Shadowfell. Now ghostly creatures swarm the District, as if Kabal’s, Nostura’s and Gyrion’s minions weren’t already enough. As the story proceeds it becomes evident that a necromancer called Morlanth is trying to build an army of wraiths. Adventurers need to forge an unholy alliance with a lich to gain access to the Netherese village Evernight and then eventually defeat Morlanth in the Shard of Night to end that threat.

VKjn2kF.jpg?resize=800%2C450&ssl=1Shard of Night floating over the River District Shard of Night becomes repeatable

Once completed the shadowy tower becomes a repeatable instance like the other demiplanes and offers the same loot. The new companion to grab is a Netherese Warlock with an interesting active bonus. It adds damage when foes are not facing you. Especially for melee DPS that constantly fight on the opposite side of the boss this could be a great option. The key to replay the Shard of Night is not included in the packages of the others, but has to be farmed separately. Drop rate is not really great, so it’s a bit of a pain. Especially in the first days when everyone and their mother will be farming ghosts, good luck of getting one…

screenshot_2017-03-30-18-07-53.jpg?resizEvernight A nice story, but not that long

tSdwhTg.jpg?resize=300%2C169&ssl=1Overall the story is well told, but also very limited. Even without VIP to cut travel times and taking a slow approach you shouldn’t need more than 60-70 minutes. The end fight in the Shard of Night against Morlanth was surprisingly hard and not paying attention to the AoE attack my 4k CW actually soulforged once. As always there are a few hidden achievements and titles to explore, this time with a heavy drinking theme. The Evernight was a nice change of scenery and I also like the sense of humor shown in the dialogues.

Overall however you realize it’s not a natural addition to the Cloaked Ascendancy storyline and completely unattached to other River District activities. Morlanth and the wraiths would have worked everywhere, maybe thematically even a bit better on the Neverdeath Graveyard. But that’s really just a minor point in an update that does not really focus on the solo adventure anyway and simply delivers an enjoyable side story.

The new Neverwinter module Shroud of Souls has a new Featured Quest available to end-game players. The threat of the Cloaked Ascendancy may be at an end, but there are other sinister powers at work in the River District.

    The Shard of Night

    d200c60f7cedced734082995be49851f14922133

The quest begins with the appearance of a strange shadowy tower in the skies above the skies of the River District of Neverwinter. Wraiths now creep around the back alleys and shadows, draining the life of anyone unfortunate enough to wander nearby.

    Descent Into Darkness

    d83fad9df35bc5dae9eb7ca262a1046c14922133

Sergeant Knox and Kavatos Stormeye need your help in ending this undead threat. The adventure takes you to from the River District to the Underdark and beyond!

    Creatures of Shadows

    9de056d65a1493025de2dffa051483e314922133

Dangerous creatures from the Shadowfell, a necrotic plane inhabited by undead, have begun to find their way into the Material Plane. The wraith’s ability to teleport around the battlefield and drain life from their victims makes them difficult to kill.

Shadows, while more fragile than wraiths, are also much deadlier. Perceptive adventurers that know to listen for the shadow’s eerie screech before it strikes are far more likely to survive an attack from one.

    Dark Treasures

Completing this quest earns you powerful new treasures! One of the rewards is an unique chest piece draped in the dark essence of a powerful necromancer that lets the weak survive when their foes do not.

You may also end up with a new companion, a Netherese Arcanist that is more than willing to negotiate allegiances and teach you a thing or two about attacking your foes from the shadows.

    Adventure Awaits!

Will you brave the necromantic powers of the Shroud of Souls and find the ancient necromancer at its source?  Check out Neverwinter: Shroud of Souls!

To keep it all together, they are releasing a new lockbox also!  Many of the items look to be stats for the recently changed Devoted Cleric.

Developer Blog: Lockbox of the Nine

At the birth of the city of Neverwinter, the founder asked his most loyal guards, the Neverwinter Nine, to gather and pack gear, artifacts, and supplies to be saved for future times of trouble.  With the darkness that threats the River District in Neverwinter, the time has come to unearth and unlock the Lockboxes of the Nine.

This lockbox will be available in the game on May 2.

To open a Lockbox of the Nine, you’ll need an Enchanted Key. Keys are available from the Zen Market or, if you’re a VIP member, you get one new key for free every day.

The founder himself donated a rare but powerful mount to the future of Neverwinter.  The Celestial Stag is a magically created stag crafted from the powers of the Astral Plane.  The spells to create these majestic stags have been lost to time, which makes this hidden treasure a rare find indeed.

This creature serves as a swift and powerful mount to those it finds worthy:

    * Legendary mount speed
    * Equip Power:  Celestial Calm (+2,000 Recovery and Regen)
    * Combat Power: Call of the Stars (Your Celestial Stag calls down a rain of stars, damaging all nearby enemies and slowing them.)

While the Neverwinter Nine filled these packs with essential goods, they felt that the future holds troubling times and they wished to be there to protect Neverwinter.  As such, they vowed and bound their souls to a power artifact that their succesors could use, the Sigil of the Nine.  This artifact calls to the souls of the Neverwinter Nine, summoning their spirits to come aid Neverwinter and the brave souls that protect this great city.

The Neverwinter Nine were not the only ones to donate to this lockbox.  The citizens of Neverwinter put together items and family heirlooms which can be found in The Advisor's Artifact Pack, The Lord's Stronghold Pack, The Noble's Enchantment Pack, The Squire's Companion Pack, and The Quartermaster's Professions Pack.

The workers of the founder’s keep also gave the future saviors a means to protect themselves.  The Keep's Artifact Equipment Pack offers a new piece of Artifact Equipment, the Cloak of the Protector. This simple looking cloak makes a complete set with the Cragmire Artifacts and the Greater Belts for a simple but useful bonus.

And let us not forget the Cavalry! The Cavalry's Mount Pack, including some never-before seen mounts:

With the Lockboxes of the Nine put together with the intent to be used in the protection of Neverwinter, these goods could not have fallen into better hands then yours.  It’s time to see what the Neverwinter Nine saved for you!
